There's a book dedicated to explaining why right-brainers will rule the world. Yeah, not going to happen any time soon, unless our geography and science textbooks are outdated.
Society just likes order too much. Who dictates the superiority I don't know. But a systematic, well-organised, and efficient grand scheme is more systematic, well-organised, and efficient.
It's evolution, probably, a direct line from advanced to left-brained. Or advanced means left-brained and left-brained arguably means dull.
The consequence of left-brained-ness is modern technology, which includes a bunch of selfish stuff, electronics like ipads, automation like assembly lines, medication like Viagra, research like cancer, medication like pills to inject endorphins preventing depression.
Cause we want convenience of our stuff; before computers ate our souls (if we had souls but I doubt it), now we can have our souls eaten on-the-go. Who needs human labour workers when you can automate stuff, down-sizing companies and laying off workers? Had too much sex and suffering from erectile dysfunction? Viagra is your free pass to have more sex. Diagnosed with cancer? You can live longer off your money and also tax-payers. Depression and insomnia suck, so you can imbalance chemicals and mess with the body's natural functions. You can inspire sleep with a pill.
Again a bit too thoroughly, many left-brained consequences are selfish. Well cancer research is more honourable, but that's beside the point.
Now what about the endearments of right brains? Art! Painting, dancing, music, acting, spirituality, transcendence, emotion! The sort of things that could in theory, prevent wars and instill harmony in daily life. Art is universal, it's encompassing, everlasting, uniting. Spirituality is self-fulfilling, happiness creating.
But then left-braining resulted in the concept of money, something to fuss over, and contributes greatly to the 'box world' (remember Pete's story in Kearney?) It also made SATs, which we have yet to experience.
Right Braining focuses on wholes. It sees the forest of humankind, and the universe. Left braining sees the trees, creating a bunch of trees that block your view of the forest. The trees are ephemeral but the forest is not.
Society favours left-brainers for being analytical, rational, logical, objective, and sequential. To handle the amazing amount of data in the age which relies heavily on numbers. Parents put value on jobs like doctors.
What sucks, is that this age defines you by numbers, your marks and your age and SATs, or so I've heard. If society was more right-brained, we wouldn't need that much tangible definition. Daily lifestyles would be random, intuitive, and fantasy (creative) oriented.
It's currently the information age, and the 'conceptual age' is yet to come. I'm waiting for the devout left brainers (sorry for the stereotype), doctors, lawyers and accountants to outburst, "what conspiracy is this?!". Of course, it's not going to be that dramatic, or clear-cut. What if it does become the conceptual age? Wouldn't most people, since the 'new millennium kids' cohort was brought up to value information, and the cohorts that came before like the baby boomers valued hard work in the age that burdened their backs, find it hard to adapt? Then again, it's not going to be a revolution.
Nevertheless, it's about time we're going to (if we are going to) shine the spotlight on the right brain and start favouring the non-material aspects of life.
